The Panama Canal
Panama literally means "an abundance of fish and butterflies." It is located in Central America and it borders both the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean. Panama's climate can be classified as hot, humid, and cloudy, with a prolonged rainy season and a short dry season. The internal terrain is mostly steep with rugged mountains and divided upland plains, while the coastal areas predominantly consist of plains and rolling hills. Panama offers a wide selection of pristine beaches to those who vactation there. The strategic location of Panama between North and South America forms a land bridge that connects the two continents. The Panama Canal is an international waterway that links the Atlantic Ocean, by means of the Caribbean Sea, with the Pacific Ocean. The canal is an integral part of maritime trade.
The people of Panama are reffered to as Panamanians. Approximately 3,510,045 people inhabit the country. About 70% of the people that comprise the population are Mestizos, or people of mixed Spanish- Amerindian descent. An Amerindian is of both American and Indian descent. Other ethnic groups are mixed Amerindian and West Indian, Caucasian, and Amerindian. Spanish is the official language of Panama, but a large amount of Panamanians are bilingual. The capital is Panama City and the country is governed by a constitutional democracy.
